Question: What has CrossFit done for you?

 

"So, the question is what has Off-Base CrossFit done for me?  It should be, how has Off-Base CrossFit changed my life?  I will share with you my experience.  For several years I slowly, but steadily drifted in a cesspool of inactivity and overeating. Actually, it was on my favorite side of my living room couch.  Anyway, I had for the most part always been in good shape, athletics in school, a tour in the Army, and my job, but hey, life happens.  A man gets married, starts a family, and he gets older. That’s when the excuses start, I’m tired, I’m busy, and one more beer and one more slice of cheesecake isn’t going hurt, right?   Mean while your friends and family don’t tell you that you’re morphing into Fat Bastard right before their very eyes, (Fat Bastard) is the fat character in the Austin Powers movie by the way.

 

Let me fast forward from then to the beginning of 2010, there I was 39 years old and feeling like crap.  I mean sick physically, not to mention sick of looking at myself in the mirror.  I was moody, always tired, sleepy, no energy, just completely unmotivated.  I didn’t like to go out anymore, I avoided being in pictures, and was miserable.  So I went to the doctor for a check up.  After running tests and participating in a sleep study, the diagnosis was bad.  I’m 5’6”, and the doctor classified me as obese for weighing 225lbs, my blood pressure was way up, my triglycerides were high, and was also diagnosed with sleep apnea.  He told me that I needed to do something.  I tried, some running, some bike riding, and of course tried to change my diet.  It just wasn’t panning out.  I left it to, “I’m about to turn 40, and I guess this is just how it’s going to be”.  Still I would look at myself and hear myself whizzing when I breathed, it was depressing.  I felt like one of those addicts on the Intervention show.

 

Some friends had mentioned CrossFit before, but I didn’t really know what it was about.  I had been to the gym and lifted and tried to get a routine, but honestly I hate working solo, I never kept up with it.  Then one day in October while driving home, I happened to see a sign put up that said Off-Base CrossFit.  I said, “Great it’s right here close to home”.  I promised myself that I would check it out.  Well, a few days after my 40th birthday, I went for a bike ride, and on the way back, I stopped by.  I met Melody, and asked her how it all worked, and that I was interested in trying CrossFit.  I told her that I was in horrific shape, and she said come by, I’ll help you out.  That was the beginning of a lifestyle change that was long overdue.  I told my wife about it, and she kindly bit her tongue and didn’t state the usual, “It’s just another program you’re not going to finish”.  She was almost right.  Let me tell you, that first week was extremely tough, not to mention painful!  Melody said, “You need to keep showing up and stick with it”.  I’m so glad I did;  Off-Base CrossFit and Melody have truly changed my life.

 

After a couple of weeks, I started to notice slight improvements, in my times, my form, etc.  Melody kept pushing, and I kept going.  After almost 2 months, I began to get a little worried though about not melting the weight away.  Melody explained to me more than likely why the weight wasn’t coming off.   That’s when she suggested I try the Paleo diet or (Caveman Diet).  I decided to give it a shot.  It was difficult at first, but I have gotten used to it, it’s not that bad.  I also kept a food log, which Melody checks everyday, and if I don’t bring it, 25 burpees is the punishment.  Three months into it, I woke up one morning and it was like the weight was starting to shed I was like “Wow”!!  The workouts are different, tough, but challenging, and fun.  It’s been great.  It’s given me a whole new sense of worth, and confidence.  I have made new friends there, and appreciate the support and motivation they have shared with me.

 

Exactly 6 months later in April of this year, I had a follow-up with the doctor.  Man, was he surprised.  I had dropped weight, my triglycerides had gone way down, and so did my blood pressure.  The doctor even commented on the smile on my face.  CrossFit may not be for everybody, but it has definitely worked for me, I love it.  So far I have lost 32 pounds, going from 225lbs to 193lbs.  My Ultimate goal is to get down to at least 180lbs, 13 more pounds to go.  Gotta do it.  All I can say is, if you’re interested, go for it.  Thanks for pushing Mel!!!!"

"OFF-Base CrossFit is strength – physical and mental. It brings peace of mind, motivation, hell, enlightenment, the impossible made possible…all rolled into one. It’s a network of support like no other.

 

I have become much more confident in what I do everyday thanks to CrossFit and Coach Mel. I came here with a basic fitness foundation, and she helped tremendously in building on that. I have lost 21 lbs. since working out at Off-Base CrossFit, and recently I have started trying to eat Paleo. I have lost inches in places I had not lost any in while working out at a gym for 7 months.

 

Coach Mel has taken me out of my comfort zone and pushed me to destinations I did not think I could reach. She has given me this drive and determination to continue my journey of doing what is right for me – what is best for me and my kids.

 

Being a part of Off-Base CrossFit has not only given me a new outlook on my body and what it’s capable of, but it’s also taught me an important lesson on how to go about through life. You cannot live a fulfilled life by just existing and going through the same motions everyday because it is easier. You have to push yourself to the limit, and oftentimes you need someone else by your side to show you exactly where those limits are. That support system has always been solid at OFF-Base CrossFit, and it has given me the strength to stay on my newfound path.

 

CrossFit has helped keep me to stay sane while it seemed as though everything else was crumbling around me. It has kept my mind off of any negativity coming my way, and by showing me what I’m capable of, it has helped to get me into the mindset that I can overcome any obstacle, physical or otherwise. I don’t know where I would be without OFF-Base CrossFit and Coach Mel, but I do know I would not have come as far or been as strong, and I thank Coach Mel and OFF-Base CrossFit for being here for me – not just for me but for everyone they have helped and are continuing to help."
